I’m going to go with a slightly different answer than everyone else.

The big city and popular chains probably do their best to get it right, but when you aren't in a major market or metropolitan area do you think they give a GD about proper specs.Įven nursing homes and restaurants are completely different places when they know they are being inspected/audited. Not pulling stuff outa my butt but Scorsese and Nolan aren't the only ones that were calling out some theaters. Unfortunately the most expensive one is the only one where I can get immersed in the movie. I have 3 theaters in driving distance to my house, and the newest theater has issues with sound bleeding through from the room next to it during loud scenes (especially the bass and this is the AMC) and the oldest ones screens need to be updated. Can you say that every theater does it correctly? Sounds like some of those guys can be real pricks. Now in places with laser projectors we often struggle to bring the light levels down to spec which is equally bad because then dark scenes lose proper contrast and look muddy. While that is a cost savings measure on the lamp purchasing side and also helps deal with supply chains shortages it actually uses more electricity to run an older lamp as the arc gap gets brighter and requires more current to stay lit. The only caveat to that is that currently some places are running their lamps beyond warrantied hours where they usually pulled them right at 100% of warrantied life.

Site staff didn’t even have the login credentials to change light levels. Light levels were tested and set by technicians three times a year and results were logged in a database. None of the big chains are under lighting screens and in fact for most of the last 10 years after the digital projectors were rolled out they would be in breach of contract with the leases on the projectors. I’ve been servicing projection equipment for 2 decades and it’s totally not true.

  • Televisions shows are often compressed by the cable company.
  • This happens with some movies, it happens a lot with older television shows when they are 'remastered'.
  • Sometime the people who apply filters to the show or movie are lazy and don't perform a quality check.
  • Sometimes compression artifacts are camouflaged by making the movie darker.
  • Some movies have been heavily compressed during post-processing, that can make a movie look darker.
  • Some movies are dark to hide shoddy CGI.
  • Some movie theaters haven't gone digital, but have dimmed the projector bulb, again the image is too dark.
  • Sometimes the projector is simply not calibrated.
  • Some movie theaters leave the 3D lens on the digital projector when showing a 2D movie, which results in an image that is too dark (by a large margin).
  • There are a few things to consider and I'm going to mention television shows even though you are talking about theatrical releases only.
